Ask the Astrologer: Will I widen my social circle soon?

By Christopher Renstrom

Although I love my friends, I am becoming increasingly more interested in meeting new people and expanding my social circle. Do you see this happening for me anytime soon? My birthday is 1-19-1980.

It makes perfect sense that you would want a change of social scene with your Ruling Planet Saturn traveling through the zodiac sign of Libra. Libra is ruled by Venus, named after the Roman Goddess of Love and Beauty. Venus is the planet of relationships in Astrology and it’s her job to bring like-minded people together. Venus was social networking centuries before Facebook and she’s always placed a high value on who you know and the people they know. Venus loves to mix and match and with your Ruling Planet Saturn in Libra for the next two years you’re going to be meeting people from different walks of life. You may find that they have higher aims than the crowd that you used to hang with and that they have sharper minds and are even more worldly. There’s an unabashed elitism to Libra energy and though you may feel a little intimidated about this at first, I’m pretty sure that you’ll warm to them in time. You just spent the past two plus years with Saturn in Virgo, the zodiac sign of the student. You’ve had all you can take of the cloistered, academic life. You want to get your nose out of the books and live a little– and Ruling Planet Saturn traveling through Libra will certainly support you in that.

Bear in mind that you also just emerged from your Saturn return where you shed many of your old ways of thinking, relating, and being. It’s perfectly natural that you would want to explore things that are new—whether it’s a new “look”, a new perspective, or a new lifestyle. Old friends don’t do very well with transitions like these. They mean well, of course, and they’ll want to be supportive—but you may find that they keep leading you back to the same familiar answers whenever you ask them for advice or support. And this isn’t because they want to undermine you or hold you back. It’s just that they want you to stay the person that they’ve always been friends with. It’s a comfort zone thing. That’s what makes this a good time to socialize with people who don’t have a lot of history with you. You don’t have to deal with the past baggage so you can try out different “yous” without feeling self-conscious. This can be very liberating for a Capricorn who puts so much weight on the past and continuity.

The only thing to watch out for is the Venus retrograde from October 8th through November 18th. This could signal a nasty break with a girlfriend (Venus rules women and Venus retrograde often brings difficulties with gal pals, female co-workers and bosses). If this comes to pass, then take it in stride. Sometimes friends need to take a break from each other and this wouldn’t be the worse thing for both of you. Trust in your friendship and that you will meet again further down the road when the time is right.
