The Aquarium Age: Oct. 2-8

By Ralfee Finn

A tantrum shut down the United States government on October 1, and as we move through the next several days and weeks, the standoff is sure to worsen. From an astrological perspective, the source of this political nervous breakdown is the ongoing, ever-escalating intensity of the Uranus/Pluto squares. We’re in the thrall of the next exact contact, which occurs on November 1, and the mounting fervor and rising fever of this fractious interaction feels like a massive tractor beam of unrelenting intensity pulling us inexorably toward crisis, individual as well as collective.

For those of you new to this astral series, seven exact squares between Uranus and Pluto take place between June 2012 and March 2015. Uranus symbolizes the revolutionary. Pluto represents the process of death and rebirth. Squares signify hard relationships that tend to find both remedy and relief in action. Both planets are in Cardinal Signs—Uranus is in Aries, the Sign of the individual; Pluto is in Capricorn, the Sign of government. And because Cardinal Signs initiate action, sometimes simply for its own sake, daily life has begun to resemble a marathon of extreme conditions, actions, reactions and the all too real consequences of both.

The Sun, in Libra, joined the Uranus/Pluto volatility last week, forming a T-Square. Yesterday, on October 1, contact between the Sun and Pluto was exact. Tomorrow, October 3, the Sun will be exactly opposite Uranus. On October 4, the Moon joins that opposition, ramping-up and amplifying emotional responses to the entire mess. Astrological configurations play out along a spectrum from negative to positive. From a collective perspective, the negative potential of this entire bundle is likely to continue to manifest as fanaticism, driven by an almost brutal, ruthless need for control. The positive potential of this T-Square supports progressive reform that is inspired by a desire to break free from whatever enslaves. From a personal perspective, that need for liberation could motivate unusual choices, some innovative and others, just impulsive. If you are uncertain, stay uncertain. Remember: One possible definition for mental health is “the ability to live comfortably with uncertainty.”

As the coming weeks unfold, the temptation to devolve into meltdowns and tantrums as an immediate solution to frustration or anxiety about your situation will grow increasingly attractive. Rather than devolve, do your best to evolve into a compassionate, patient attitude. Focus obsessive tendencies on preparations for Mercury’s final retrograde of the year, which begins on October 21 and lasts until November 10. Back up everything…now…do not procrastinate because you are fartoost or fermisht because life is fershtoonkeneh and the government is ferkockteh. (It’s Yiddish, and you can look up all the meanings, but it’s not necessary; they are all onomatopoeic for the current state of affairs.)

If you know your Ascendant and/or your Moon Sign, read that, too.

Aries March 21-April 19
Make “calm, cool, and collected” your personal mantra, especially when it comes to interactions with significant others. With the exception of life and death circumstances, this is not the time to polarize with partners.

Taurus April 20-May 20
It’s all logistics and time management, particularly the time you spend brooding about all there is to do. Prioritize your goals with an eye toward letting go of what’s superfluous. Don’t let the least important task steal the show.

Gemini May 21-June 21
It’s a choice: Get lost in worrying about situations you can’t control, or learn to surrender to forces bigger than yourself. It’s not as simple as it sounds, I know, but the benefits of letting go are well worth the effort.

Cancer June 22-July 22
Simply hunker down at home and do not apologize for laying low and doing whatever it is you need to feel safe and secure. When you’re rested, restored, and refreshed you’ll eventually venture forth.

Leo July 23-August 22
Choose your words carefully, and don’t underestimate the extent of your influence. Be precise, clear, and consistent—lots of people are paying attention to what you have to say.

Virgo August 23-September 22
Breathe, deeply, and then breathe again and again and again until you can feel yourself fully present in your body. Plant your fully present feet on the ground, and then take the first steps toward maintaining a grounded attitude.

Libra September 23-October 22
It sounds and feels like the same old song, but it’s not—you have the power to change your attitude and your behavior. Seize this moment and use it to transform a negative attitude into a fresh, positive outlook.

Scorpio October 23-November 21
You’re challenged by the brain worm, that famous mind parasite that steals all your mental might by insisting you compulsively chew on the same data. There’s nothing new here, except realizing the detrimental effects of brooding self-recrimination.

Sagittarius November 22-December 21
There’s every reason for you to desire greater recognition for your contribution. Even if others don’t see it, you’re doing a great job and it’s completely reasonable to desire validation for all your efforts.

Capricorn December 22-January 19
You’re in a tough spot, if only because you desire to please the people you love, but you just can’t bring yourself to compromise on certain issues. Stay with this process, and you’ll eventually find a balance.

Aquarius January 20-February 18
You’re not speaking in tongues, but you’re likely to have a hard time communicating what’s important because you still aren’t clear about your priorities. Make some time to sit and think about what you really want—and why.

Pisces February 19-March 20
It’s a clash of values, and while it may not be particularly easy to discern where you’re polarizing with others, if you step back from the situation, and look at it from a new perspective, you’ll start to see what needs to shift.
