The Aquarium Age: July 9-15

By Ralfee Finn

Welcome to 2014: Part 2, the retro-free second half the year, when all the planets that drive the day-to-day mechanics of daily life—Mercury, Venus, and Mars— are in forward gear, unimpeded by a cosmic impulse to reflect on the past, as well as absolutely free to move at their own pace. If you haven’t already experienced the “direct effect” on attitudes and activities, yours or others’, don’t worry. Some transitions take more than a moment to facilitate. But if you have noticed the change of air, you could find yourself relishing the change of pace, happily making plans or simply enjoying the almost hassle-free ride. And while there are a couple of planetary bumps over the course of the next several weeks, it will be fairly easy to fold those obstacles into regular routines without too much disruption. So if you haven’t already, take a deep breath, and allow yourself to relax.

Mars, once again, sets the tone for this week and the next several weeks, as it enters the last two weeks plus of its seemingly endless journey through Libra. It enters Scorpio on July 25, and as it gets ready to leave Libra behind, Mars squares the Sun in Cancer; this square began on July 6 and lasts until the end of the month; it’s exact on July 19. Sun/Mars interactions are always spirited, and even though squares are known to produce friction, this might not be such an unwelcome energy given that many of us have been in such a strange torpor. (Okay…I actually can’t believe I’m using a word I memorized for the GREs so many long years ago.) Now, as we break free from months of sluggishness, a little fractious fire could spark and ignite ambition and action. I’m not advocating anger or fighting as a way to manage lethargy; I’m simply suggesting that at this particular astral intersection the crankiness of a Sun/Mars square could act as a catalyst for positive change.

Mars also squares Jupiter during Jupiter’s final days in Cancer. Jupiter moves into Leo on July 16—more about what that portends in next week’s column. A Mars/Jupiter square tends toward excess, and one of the ways the tension of this square could manifest is a gnawing anxiety about partnerships of every denomination—personal and professional, romantic and Platonic, intimate and casual. Mars is in the last moments of Libra, the Sign of relating; Jupiter is in its final moments of Cancer, the Sign of security. And the merging of those two themes filtered through the exaggeration of Mars/Jupiter could result in relationship insecurity: She/he loves me…loves me not…. And if the answer is yes…well, how much…and is it enough? And so forth and so on and so goes the litany of emotional uncertainty. On a positive note, this square could also motivate the desire to work on relationship issues in order to find a clear path through the projections and transference that often magnify problems, and sometimes even create problems that aren’t there.

And speaking of relationships, Mars also trines Venus. This positive interaction is exact on July 13, and lasts until July 19. As Mars kisses the goddess of love, many of us might be feeling similar urges or at least inclined, strongly, toward the amorous—the perfect angle to catch the light of Jupiter’s presence in Leo, the Sign of romance.

A lot of planetary activity also contributes to the new view. Several planets change Signs this month: On July 13, Mercury enters Cancer. On July 16—just one week away—Jupiter moves into Leo. On July 18, Venus enters Leo. The Sun moves into Leo on July 22 and, as already mentioned, Mars begins its transit of Scorpio on July 25.

The only potential snag in forward momentum occurs in about a week, as Saturn “slows down” in preparation to go direct on July 20. Uranus goes retrograde on July 21, which means by next week, Uranus will also seemingly move at a crawl as it prepares for its annual review. Both are occurring at the same degree, but at an angle that often indicates missed connections. So while their simultaneous shift isn’t necessarily worrisome, several regular routines might suffer from the strain.

But that’s no reason to put a damper on activities. This week, and the coming weeks of retrograde freedom are wide open with opportunities to grow as well as to have fun. Share that joy with your fellow travelers as often as possible and you’ll be able to watch it grow.

Sun Bursts: If you know your Ascendant and/or your Moon Sign, read that, too.

Aries March 21-April 19
Use the last few moments of Mars, in Libra, to spotlight pressing partnership issues still in need of a fresh approach. You are not required to move into action, although you may not be able to resist the impulse to speak your truth. Have at it; but as you share what’s on your mind, remember that not everyone will agree with your point of view—and learning to handle differences in opinion is actually the point.

Taurus April 20-May 20
Allow yourself to unwind, let go, and just relax into a deep appreciation and gratitude for what is. To be sure, there is always more to do, something else to say, another responsibility to shoulder, or someone else to help. Yet at this moment, it might be exponentially beneficial to just be in the moment, experience what you have created, and witness the power of presence.

Gemini May 21-June 21
While it’s unclear exactly where you will land, it is completely clear that you are in a major transition. Rather than trying to control the outcome, give yourself permission to stretch out into new territory. Yes, handling the uncertainty of exactly what, where, and when can stress your nervous system, but you can handle the tension especially if you allow your innate curiosity to guide the process.

Cancer June 22-July 22
The planets are dialing up a new frequency, and even though the cliché about Cancer is that you don’t like change, there isn’t much to resist in this next transition. So rather than fret about what will be, take off your armor and embrace the still shifting perspective. Sure…you might get a little dizzy from the spin, but you won’t lose your balance.

Leo July 23-August 22
Exhale…you’re out of the dark woods and into the bright sunlight, and even though there are lingering concerns about how to hold certain situations in a positive perspective, many recent struggles seem to solve themselves, almost effortlessly. Then, inhale…and remember what you already know to be true: Laughter and joy are the key to your success.

Virgo August 23-September 22
Expect a bumpy day or two as your nervous systems recalibrates itself to the new, easier pace. And although it might feel a bit strange to put aside your “what’s wrong with this picture” glasses, it will also feel lighter once you figure out how to let go. I’m not suggesting that every difficulty will end, but if you stay present, you’ll feel the stress and tension diminish.

Libra September 23-October 22
Yes…you are still wrestling with the question of how to balance your needs with the needs of others, especially significant others. And while there is no one-size-fits-all solution, there is the potential to find specific remedies for specific situations. Take each day one day at a time, and even though this may sound like trite advice, you might be surprised by the simplicity and effectiveness of the process.

Scorpio October 23-November 21
You are about to emerge from a nearly eight-month chrysalis, and there is absolutely no telling what kind of butterfly you will be. So don’t be surprised if you surprise yourself over the course of the next several weeks. You’ve been chewing on lots of ideas since last December, and as Mars moves out of the deep, you will find renewed determination to integrate your realizations. Or put another way: You will spread your gorgeous wings and fly.

Sagittarius November 22-December 21
As the planetary shift in perspective lifts you higher and higher, you could experience a deep need to dance the night away, or flirt the days away, or simply talk the days and nights away with friends and family. Have at it: Engage in dialogue about all those things you’ve been thinking and dreaming about, and then listen to all the ideas your ideas will ignite.

Capricorn December 22-January 19
This transition moves you into a convivial attitude and gregarious action. That’s right—you are calling friends, hanging out, turning acquaintances into intimates, and all around generally being far more social than you normally are. This is a good antidote to that tendency to be alone. So give yourself permission to reach out and touch as many people as possible.

Aquarius January 20-February 18
You are moving into action, and even though it might require extra effort to shift from first gear to turbocharged, you probably won’t have much of a choice. The next few months are as dynamic as the last few months were static. Use this time to focus on what you want to accomplish and then, start to plan how to best spend your time, energy, and talent.

Pisces February 19-March 20
It’s hard to stay focused on one theme, especially when your intuition is pulling you in so many diverse directions. So rather than feeling oppressed by responsibility and in reaction to that oppression, spreading yourself too thin, take the time to identify your priorities. Once you know what’s most important, you can concentrate on those areas without feeling confined or confused.
