The Aquarium Age: Aug. 7-13

By Ralfee Finn

Excess is the key to understanding the flux of daily life this week. From the “I deserve to have more than necessary” to the “oh I wish I had everything” to the “I who have nothing” attitudes swing to extremes. Best to be prepared for these shifting moods, yours or others’, to be quite expressive—the Sun is in Leo after all. Also anticipate that reactions to whatever is expressed are certain to be equally dramatic.

Also keep in mind that this tendency toward excess easily supports self-indulgence. Minor incidents could morph into major melodramas, and hurt feelings could lead to a lack of restraint. Before you seek revenge, consider the consequences. Yes, yelling at an “idiot” will relieve your immediate frustration, but the effect of that tirade could have an almost eternal afterlife. So rather than say something you might later regret, bite your tongue until it bleeds. This week, kindness is not just the moral high ground; it’s a lifeboat on the stormy seas of conscious living.

Jupiter is the celestial source of our terrestrial, and mostly emotional, extravagance. While Jupiter has been a part of the ongoing Uranus/Pluto square since July 17, this week, Mars is finally far enough away and its presence no longer offers any real interference, all of which makes it possible for Jupiter to grab hold of this volatile interaction. And as a result craving of every conceivable kind simply escalates. Those of us with a prominent natal Jupiter will recognize this signature almost immediately as the “Just leave the bottle, tray, chips, change, or all the rest of the cookies on the table.” Those not normally given to such strong appetites might think something is terribly wrong because they just can’t say “no.”

Jupiter/Pluto combinations feed the ambitions of those longing to be plutocrats, so don’t be surprised if you suddenly experience the need to lord your success over others or have others attempting to lord theirs over you. Neither position will hold for long, especially because the other tendency in Jupiter/Pluto interactions is the tendency to see just where the excess lies. And because Uranus, the astral symbol of revolution, also plays a role in this interaction, the wretched excess of our current capitalist plutocracy is likely to be seen even more clearly—if that’s possible.

But here’s the interesting thing about Jupiter: While it signifies success and lavish extravagance, as well as greed, Jupiter also symbolizes wisdom, and the search for spiritual understanding. Hmmm…how could one symbol seemingly embody such a significant polarization: the material/spiritual axis? I have no actual, tangible evidence as to why ancient astrologers attributed this range to Jupiter (and if anyone reading this does, please share it). But this far-reaching domain of Jupiter’s characteristics seems to be congruent with an idea found cross-culturally that once you have everything—every material need met—you will still encounter the inexorable predicament of the human heart: Only love has ultimate value. And in that moment of realization where love is, actually, the answer, Jupiter sheds its cloak of avarice and craving and becomes the symbol of universal generosity, personifying our interconnected interdependence.

If you know your Ascendant and/or your Moon Sign, read that, too.

Aries March 21-April 19
Acknowledging the importance of significant others—friends, family, lovers, or business partners—won’t weaken your position. Honoring their contribution will only increase your enthusiasm and enhance your efforts.

Taurus April 20-May 20
I know you’re tired of hearing about the importance of words (and I’m tired of reminding you about their power), but this week, you’re tempted to make promises you can’t keep. Rather than be grand and, perhaps, foolish, be circumspect and wise.

Gemini May 21-June 21
Continue to throw money at the problem or wish you had the money to throw, but neither position offers the solution you crave. Release yourself from conventions, and you’ll find the perfect creative answer.

Cancer June 22-July 22
Rather than stress about the outcome, stand firmly in the realization that the outcome or the future (which is what you’re really worried about) is created by decisions made in the present. Then, clear your head, and think about what choices would best serve the long term.

Leo July 23-August 22
You have access to a treasure trove of creative ideas, and all that’s required is the willingness to trust your instincts. Even though you feel cautious about sharing your gifts, don’t give into to that anxiety. Instead, allow your genius to be an inspiration for others.

Virgo August 23-September 22
While you may feel at times as if you live everywhere, your home is the anchor that allows you to move freely in the world. Give yourself permission to make home improvements and you’ll increase your sense of internal as well as external stability.

Libra September 23-October 22
Whether or not you’re in a relationship, the pendulum continues to swing, and as it does, it asks: How far is too far in your search for emotional independence? Remember, this applies to significant others, personal and professional, as well as to your role in the lives of others.

Scorpio October 23-November 21
The only solution is to once again review the plans and your participation. This is not the grueling retrospective of a retrograde. You have an opportunity to engage a broad perspective that takes in more than the momentary need, as it simultaneously addresses an abiding longing.

Sagittarius November 22-December 21
You’re at risk for a close encounter with the Brain Worm, that famous psychic parasite who steals precious mental energy by compulsively chewing on old circumstances. Rather than brood over lost opportunities, consider the possibility of present time remedies.

Capricorn December 22-January 19
Try not to let the demands of partners interfere with what you would like to create—for you. I’m not suggesting a callous approach. I’m simply advising you to be true to yourself and what you need before you decide that compromise is the only reasonable position.

Aquarius January 20-February 18
Sometimes there is “the kinda crazy you get from too much choice” and if ever that were true, it’s true for you, at least for the moment. Yes, you’re overwhelmed, but you can also take a deep breath, find a comfortable pace, and take your time.

Pisces February 19-March 20
The problem with powerful phases of personal transformation is that we don’t often get a chance to call “time out,” catch our breath, and remember that we aren’t in control of the outcome—only spirit is. Let go and allow the situation to unfold in its own time and its own way.
