The Novice’s Grimoire: Feb 25th – Mar 3rd Mystery Topic – Love, Sex & Astrology

Dear reader, welcome back to the Novice’s Grimoire. The past two weeks we have covered self-love heightened through the use of Opal, and Aphrodisiacs and Love Potions’ abilities to subtly seduce your love through their senses (here and here). Since this is the last week of February, let’s make this our last overt post about love for some time to come. With our eyes to the midnight sky and our hands placed close to our beating hearts, let’s talk about Love, Sex & Astrology.

Historically speaking, it is said that astrology (once synonymous with astronomy) was originally founded by the Babylonians. It was then passed on to the Greeks and Romans, and from there spread around the world. Initially used for purely utilitarian means, such as mapping seasons and celestial events, astrology eventually came to be regarded by royalty as a tool for personal success and conquest. In more recent history, it has become a popular and accessible art, today existing as readings from any number of sources, credible and otherwise. But one main draw to astrology, I daresay, is the prospect that it can lead one to that true, star-fated love. This takes us to an astrologer who has sought the point where love and stars collide, Teri King.

Screen Shot 2016 02 25 at 11.20.13 AMIn her 1973 book Love, Sex & Astrology, King provides a no-pretense guide to sex and relationships through the use of astrology. And though it has some rather antiquated notions on gender roles, it is filled with useful and truth-bearing knowledge. In brief, the book presents each sign’s physical, emotional, and personality-based characteristics, moves to discuss each sign’s detailed compatibility with the other signs, and finally provides clearly decipherable charts of said compatibility (or lack thereof). If we can come to believe that the celestial bodies we were born under have some sway over our lives (even if minimal), then we can use Love, Sex & Astrology to aid us in finding that love and/or perfecting the relationships we already have.

In their purest forms, love and sex are simply the yearning soul longing to meet and know another. King will have us see that there is a distinction between sex and love, even though they may have overlap. A “sexual partner” is that alone; a person with whom pleasure is nearly assured with. A “lover” is that person with whom a star-fated connection can be made; on some level, I suppose the sex may be assured. (King’s Love, Sex & Astrology compatibility breakdown, excluding friendships, is located at the bottom of this post.)

I, probably much like you, find it curious how accurate and terribly inaccurate astrological readings can be. I believe this adds up to nothing more than ability and craft. A skilled astrologer, like CATALYST’s own Ralfee Finn (The Aquarium Age), or King, can provide the star-centric wonderer with meaningful predictions and direction for their coming days; but advice should not be taken from just anyone.

The question now may be, “why follow or believe in astrology at all?” To this, I cannot provide any scientific reasoning, but I can say that if one is able to find a meaningful connection between their life and astrological predictions, then that connection is worth noting. For me, astrology has been a good fit. Whether seeking guidance in family, business or love relationships, astrological predictions have been right more often than they have been wrong—maybe not completely satisfying odds for the skeptic, but good enough for me. Astrology is simply a means of bringing about an (albeit vague) order to this otherwise chaotic life. And by that criterion, it seems only natural to ask the stars for direction in love and sex; at least it is a start.

And with that, let us bring an end to our discussions on love, at least for now. My hope is that these topics have been useful, both practically and theoretically, in exploring some of the various angles of love and mysticism. If you have any topics you’d like to suggest, please don’t hesitate to comment below, or message CATALYST on Facebook; I’d love to hear what interests you’d have us discuss here. And come back next week, where we’ll be covering the herb peppermint.
