Environnews: Dump at Promontory Point

By Amy Brunvand

Friends of Great Salt Lake are concerned to learn that Weber County Commissioners are about to send municipal trash to Promontory Point on the shores of Great Salt Lake.

The Utah Department of Environmental Quality granted a Class I solid waste permit in 2004 and Promontory Point Resources, LLC broke ground on the 2,000-acre site last fall.

The landfill could impact the millions of birds that depend on Great Salt Lake habitat. Use of a private landfill will also divert revenue from Utah schools since Weber County currently uses a landfill on land leased from the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA).
