Bernard & Avis Devoto and the Forgotton Fight to Save Wild Lands
Bookstore Reading and Signing byNate Schweber, author of This America of Ours: Bernard and Avis Devoto and the Fight to Save the Wild.
Bernard Devoto was a seminal western historian though many no longer know his name. Across the Wide Missouri won both the Pulitzer and Bancroft prizes the year it was published and the edition of the Journals of Lewis and Clark that he edited is the go-to version to this day. But also, he and his wife, Arvis, were extremely important in the fight to preserve the west’s wilderness. And they had to to fight McCarthy-ite Roy Cohn to do so.
