Art Talk: Yasue Maetake

Listen to Wonderland artist, Yasue Maetake, discuss the trajectory of her work as well as her current artistic interests with Kimball curator, Nancy Stoaks.

YASUE MAETAKE was recently named as one of “20 International Women Advancing the Field of Sculpture” by Artsy and was also featured in the September/October 2021 issue of Sculpture Magazine.

In sculptures that are small to large-scale, Maetake combines materials such as rocks, minerals, seashells, assorted animal bones and reflective metals into abstract and figurative forms suggesting both the ancient archetypal and the futuristic. Especially interested in the way a material’s physical presence can be viewed as a living agent rather than as a still or static object, her works draw inspiration from both Japanese Animism and Western Baroque, seeming to be perpetually in various states of motion, transition, or transformation.
