Ask the Astrologer Weekly Question: Age difference deal breaker?

September 26, 2010

I met an intriguing man who is 18 years my junior and I asked him out for a date on July 7. We had our first date on July 17 and have had many more dates since. We discussed our age difference and it isn’t an issue. This seems to be developing into a serious relationship and he is a Libra. Do we have a future? My birth date is 12/31/1961

I like the fact that you started dating just as your Ruling Planet, Saturn, entered Libra on July 21, 2010.  This is good because your Ruling Planet traveling through your friend’s astrological sign strengthens your rapport and solidifies the attraction between you.

The nice thing about going out with a Libra is that he will always check in with you to see how you’re doing.  Libra is the sign of relationships in Astrology and the focus is often on the other person.  This is what makes them so sensitive, well-mannered, and easy to get along with.  Although Librans do have a reputation for being “wishy-washy” it’s not really the most accurate way of describing them.   Librans are pretty decisive (Libra is a cardinal sign after all) but they want to make sure that everyone else is on board with whatever it is that they decide to do.  Rather than boss people around (like an Aries), Libras will often ask questions, make suggestions, or introduce hypotheticals to alert you to what they think is the best course of action.  Their approach is indirect and subtle but it serves two purposes.  They win you over to their side by making you feel like their idea of what you should do was your idea all along and they wind up getting their way without having to fight for it.  This is why so many four-star generals were born under the zodiac sign of Libra.  They’re natural born strategists.

Where you may run into trouble as a Capricorn is when you try to pin him down on specific future plans and dates.  As a Capricorn you’re very agenda driven when it comes to your schedule because you don’t like to feel like you’re wasting your time and energy. Librans, however, like to maintain a strict open-ended policy when it comes to dating.  They really believe that a relationship should be free to unfold on its own.  As a Capricorn you’ll need more concrete assurances and may even have trouble with this Libran laissez-faire approach.   Just remember that laissez-faire does not mean careless.  It’s a different type of relating—perhaps an approach that you’re not used to—but a valid way of interacting nonetheless.

Also keep in mind that his Ruling Planet Venus will be turning retrograde on October 8, 2010.  In fact Venus has already entered her “shadow” period which means that you may already be experiencing some bumps on the road to happiness.  If so, then it’s good to remember that this happens to everyone and the success of any relationship depends on the way that you negotiate these as a twosome.  The idea of “twosome” is Libra’s cardinal virtue. Focus on that and you should never have cause to doubt him.
