Ask the Astrologer: Jump on grant, or build reputation first?

By Christopher Renstrom

I’m going to be applying for a government grant in my field (substance abuse) in the near future and wonder about timing. I would be working with large numbers of people who are either on their way to prison or on their way out into society again. Since this grant is huge, I don’t want to take chances on the timing of it. I don’t have any relationships with people who are in a position to give me a grant. I’m a complete unknown, unfortunately. I’m afraid that I’m not very good at promoting myself. I’m attending conferences, but I’m an introvert, so it’s very difficult for me to make important connections. I was born 8/13/47 in the early a.m. What do you see in the stars for me?

You should apply for the grant as soon as possible. Now most astrologers would probably caution you against doing such a thing while Venus is retrograde. Although Venus retrograde isn’t as bedeviling as a Mercury retrograde, Venus retrograde still brings out people’s dark sides—as evidenced in the recent cases of bullying and gay teen suicides. Yet this may also be the very thing that brings attention to your cause. How people treat each other in society is something that’s on everyone’s radar now and you have an opportunity to tap into that.

Meanwhile you were born with Jupiter in Scorpio and Jupiter rules government and philanthropic institutions. A Scorpio Jupiter says that you would want to apply for a grant during the Scorpio time of year which is October 23 through November 21, 2010. Indeed November 18th and 19th look particularly auspicious as the Moon in Taurus will be arcing over your midheaven. The midheaven is like the 12 Noon point. It’s the most important part of the astrological chart.

Now even if you’re turned down, I still feel this is a worthwhile experience because you’ll learn what to do (and what not to do) for next time. However I do have a good feeling that this is the time to get the ball rolling. Jupiter enters Aries (a fire sign like Leo) on January 22, 2011. Aries rules the 9th house of your horoscope (the house of grants) and Jupiter will be forming a trine to your stellium of planets in Leo from February 12, 2011 through April 19, 2011. After that Jupiter enters Taurus and will be passing over your midheaven for an entire year beginning in June 2011. These are strong indications that you will be taking a significant step forward with your career. So what about your introversion? I think the more that you can stay “on message” about the work that you do, the more impassioned and emboldened you’ll become. Few people are good at promoting themselves, however that all changes when you promote something that you believe in because you take yourself out of the equation and you let that higher purpose of yours speak for itself. This should help you to transcend your shyness and to make the connections you need to make. Always remember that what you’re doing is exciting and the more that other people find out about it, the more excited they’ll become too.
