So many thoughts and feelings come to mind as I watch the sky and the news, as well as listen to friends and strangers talk about the state of our world and the condition of our lives. Too many people are displaced—and not just physically. For while you may not be in an actual flood where the waters of the sea and the sky combined to a devastating effect, you may be caught in the midst of an emotional deluge, and it could take just as long for those waters to recede—maybe even longer—as it does for the waters of Harvey, Irma, and all the other violent storms around the planet to find their new normal levels.
The stars speak to those sensitivities this week. A Mercury/Mars conjunction, in Virgo, is opposed by Neptune, in Pisces. This is a tense combination which could manifest as a restless energy that moves into action without consideration of the consequences. Yet at its core lies the potential for sympathetic responses to the plight of others. But it will take strong determination to hold an empathetic stance, especially as huge waves of grief pound the shores of minds and hearts, waves generated by millions of people struggling to get their lives back to some sort of normal. And that’s just the suffering caused by the weather. All around our increasingly small planet our fellow travelers are suffering from such extreme acts of violence and cruelty that it is almost impossible to imagine that it could grow any worse. When Desmond Tutu has to remind Aung San Suu Kyi to remember why she won a Nobel Peace Prize, it’s yet another indication that our world has turned upside down.
Recently I saw the movie Let Me Go—a film about multi-generational trauma and how trauma runs along family lines, each generation expressing another iteration of the wound. This film is particularly poignant and relevant because it is about four generations of women, three of those generations descended from a woman who abandoned her child in order to join the SS and become a Nazi officer in Auschwitz. As the movie unfolds, it becomes a deep and poignant look at what lies beneath the need to hate and how the effect of that poison infects so many lives for so many generations. It is a true story, which makes it all the more powerful. The good news is that even as it tells the truth, it also offers hope.
If we are to transform the new wave of bigotry and hatred that is infecting so many lives, we must do more than condemn it; we must understand its causes and do something about it at the causal level. Of course, that won’t be easy—it’s much harder to understand the suffering of the victimizer, especially when that victimizer is rattling swords, promising violence and wielding power. What’s more, some may argue that in this realm, the realm of samsara, which is by its nature the realm of suffering, transforming hatred is impossible. But if that were true, then soul growth would not be possible and no one would experience the power of compassion. From an astrological perspective, even though the energy has shifted and we are out of the slog of Mercury Retrograde coupled with the double-eclipse effect, we are nonetheless moving toward the third and final Jupiter/Uranus opposition on September 28, a configuration that began last Christmas and persists in its seesaw effect until March. This last pass has everything to do the functioning of the United States government, and while I don’t mean to take an American-centric position, the final degree of the Jupiter/Uranus opposition occurs in an exact square to the position of Pluto in the USA natal chart. Even if there’s no dramatic event—which is hard to imagine, given that every event is dramatic these days—there’s likely to be a window into what will become the deciding factor from 2020 through 2023.
As you move through this week and next, try to find and then maintain your personal balance. Know that this is a process and it could take more than a moment to sort yourself out. But finding that balance continues to be a must, as does helping others find theirs. We are, as always, all in this together.
Sun Bursts: If you know your Ascendant and/or your Moon Sign, read that too.
Aries March 21-April 19
The best way through the current strife is to intensify your spiritual practice—whatever that may be. I know what I am about to say may put me at risk for sounding trite, but I don’t care: Only a higher power can provide a broad enough context to make sense of your current situation. Make use of that lens and you’ll find some relief.
Taurus April 20-May 20
You’re still in the midst of a deep transformational process, but this week you have the opportunity to experience a better perspective on just how far you’ve traveled during this process. Don’t be shy about acknowledging the work you’ve done—it’s been a long and winding road, and though you may be a little weary, the fruit of your labor will be worth it.
Gemini May 21-June 21
The first rule of magic: Whatever you focus your attention on becomes your reality. If you worry about finances you’ll generate more worry, not more money. I’m not suggesting magical thinking. I’m advising you to focus your attention on methods with the power to generate a better attitude. Starting or revisiting a gratitude practice will yield positive results.
Cancer June 22-July 22
You’re in an alchemical process, turning personal lead into gold. And while this process isn’t easy, it is a worthwhile endeavor, especially if it helps you find a better balance between work and home. The key to perfecting this blend is the ability to see oppositional forces as complementary—instead of polarizing, synthesize. Synthesis will transform the tension.
Leo July 23-August 22
Don’t be ashamed of wearing your heart on your sleeve—it’s your nature to feel deeply. Just be careful not to indulge those feelings in pessimistic acts toward yourself or others. Yes, finding a way to balance your deep concerns with your need for joy is a difficult task, but you can do it, especially if you continue to rely on your innate generosity of spirit.
Virgo August 23-September 22
Your cups do runneth over—all of them—and you’re feeling abundant in every way. Now the challenge is figuring out how to share that abundance with others. Here’s a hint: Most of us learn by example. So put your best self to work modeling what it looks like when the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of life are working together, balanced and harmonious.
Libra September 23-October 22
Soon, dear Libra, we will stop talking about relationship issues, but for now, you are still in the thick of it, figuring out how to balance your needs with the needs of others. I know this is a life’s work, but Uranus upped the ante for the last nearly seven years, and it still has a few lessons to share. Take a deep breath and continue to work—eventually you’ll make the progress you desire.
Scorpio October 23-November 21
Attitude is almost always a choice, and because you are extraordinarily sensitive, making certain choices can be problematic. As always, my advice is to follow your heart, even if that means making difficult decisions that may disappoint significant others. And the reason I say that is simple: When you’re unhappy or ill at ease in a particular environment, your heart suffers. And that’s never good for the body, heart, mind, or soul.
Sagittarius November 22-December 21
It’s easy to forget just how constant change is…well…maybe not for you, at least in this particular moment. Lots of things are shifting in your life, and while you generally steer clear of boredom, at moments like this you’re longing for it. Take a deep breath, and just continue to put one foot in front of the other. You don’t see it yet, but you’re almost back to singing ch-ch-ch-changes.
Capricorn December 22-January 19
Read your counterpart, Cancer, above, and add this: Sometimes the best way to find balance is to let go of any attachment to the outcome, and instead, allow the universe to speak to you through symbol and metaphor. You’re right, that’s not as clear cut as you would like. But symbols stir the soul, and right now that’s more important than you realize.
Aquarius January 20-February 18
The balance you’re seeking is best found in the perspective of timelessness—that’s right, don’t hurry through this process. Stay concentrated in the moment on what matters most to you and you’ll realize very quickly that you’ve found the key to maintaining your equilibrium. Yes, turmoil may swirl around you, but you will stay steady.
Pisces February 19-March 20
The antidote for your imbalance is a fresh perspective that is unencumbered by history. I’m not saying the past isn’t important, but sometimes in order to break free from persistent patterns, we need a fresh start—and now would be one of those times for you. Think about how you would handle the situation from your newly gained insights and then apply that wisdom, liberally.
