The Aquarium Age: May 23-29

Time travel with me…. First to the past: Back to November 9, 2016, at 12:55 AM, when Mars entered Aquarius and the world tilted on its axis. It was still Election Day on the west coast of the United States of America, the day Donald Trump won the highest prize of the land. Prior to that day, most astrologers predicted that Hillary Clinton would win and hardly anyone saw Mr. Trump’s win, except for Michael Lutin (michaellutin.com), one of my favorite astrologers. (To the other few astrologers who predicted Mr. Trump’s win, my apologies for only singling out Mr. Lutin.)

Now, back in the time machine…and on to the future: On March 30, 2020, Mars enters Aquarius again, but this time it follows on the heels of Saturn, which just moved into Aquarius on March 21, 2020, nine days earlier. Then on December 19, 2020, Jupiter enters Aquarius, and on December 21, 2020 forms an exact conjunction with Saturn, still at the threshold of Aquarius. All of these positions—past and future—occur at the same degree of Aquarius—zero.

Back to the recent past: Last week, on May 16, Mars entered Aquarius, immediately forming a square to Uranus, which had just entered Taurus the day before. Mars/Uranus interactions always indicate an intolerant and impatient atmosphere that tends to manifest as bursts of anger and sudden violence. Sometimes these events happen exactly on the day and other times they happen very soon after exact contact, as the planets start to separate out of their hard angles. I don’t need to reiterate the headlines of last week to demonstrate that sudden explosive eruptions—not just physical, but also emotional, mental, and spiritual—dominated the week’s events.

Present time: Mars continues to transit the early degrees of Aquarius, as it did on November 9, 2016 and will again in 2020. It also continues to square Uranus, only now it is in the separation phase, which means the pernicious influence of that square persists. It won’t be easy being tolerant, staying patient, and resisting the temptation to melt down or dissolve in a tantrum. Do your best to avoid wagging fingers that only blame and punish—positive solutions are what’s needed. Harness the power of this combustive and combative configuration and convert it into the courage to take a peaceful stand for what you believe in.

Also in present time: A Venus/Saturn opposition that is exact and separating on May 26 reinforces the tendency toward a judgmental attitude. Again, rather than devolve into harsh criticism of yourself or others, practice restraint. I’m not suggesting that you surrender your opinions; I’m simply advising caution—lots of us are hypersensitive at this particular cosmic moment, and careless commentary could engender lasting negative consequences.

Back to the future: The present is created by the past, just as the future is created by the present. We’re either reacting or responding to what was set in motion, and through our reactions and responses we’re setting the future in motion. I’m making a distinction between reactions and responses because that’s where the power of the present lives. When we react, we tend to reinforce a habit. When we respond, there’s the possibility—however small—of taking a moment to consider the situation and perhaps make a different choice. When we step out of habitual reactions we enter the power of the now.

What was set in motion on Election Day, November 2016, when Mr. Trump and his Gang of Hungry Ghosts decided to turn back the hands of time and reinstitute the days of yesteryear, is affecting our current situation. But the overall consequence of that effect won’t be seen until 2020, a pivotal point that will determine how the future of the planet plays out, not just for the United States, but for the world. From an astrological perspective 2020 is already a significant year because it begins with a Saturn/Pluto conjunction, in Capricorn. (It should be noted that the Israeli State was forged under a Saturn/Pluto conjunction, in Leo. More about that in future columns.) Saturn/Pluto interactions signify the dynamic tension between the status quo and the inexorable process of change. Saturn wants to draw and hold the line, preserving the tried and true, while Pluto signifies the reality of death and eventual rebirth.

But 2020 not only begins as a wheel-turning year, it also ends with a Jupiter/Saturn conjunction. These conjunctions occur every twenty years, and although we may think of that as fairly frequent, ancient astrologers believed they were quite powerful indicators of change. These Jupiter/Saturn conjunctions were believed to signal a regime change, and when they shift from one Element to another, that change is interpreted as pervasive and massive. The Jupiter/Saturn conjunction in 2020 moves the cycle from Earth to Air. It takes place at zero Aquarius, indicating a game-changing shift in how we—and I do mean all of us—see our world. And this shift was set in motion with the 2016 Presidential Election. More about this in future columns.

As you work your way through yet another potent week, it would be wise to pay close attention to what’s happening in your individual world as well as our shared world. Awareness can act as a buoy in the midst of change because it’s an antidote to numbness. As the coming weeks and months unfold, you’ll need that buoy because it will grow increasingly difficult to stay in present time. But as difficult as it might be, it’s important to at least try. Each of us contributes to our shared future with every thought, word and deed. And the more aware we are, the better our choices.

Sun Bursts: If you know your Ascendant and/or your Moon Sign, read that too.

Aries March 21-April 19
Zero Aquarius sits on the threshold of your Solar House of community. This is one of the reasons you’re idealistic about the positive potential of the collective to make good choices. Maybe that optimism needs a little tweaking—or maybe you’re right and most of us are good at heart. Decide where your idealism is best spent and then endeavor to make it a reality.

Taurus April 20-May 20
Zero Aquarius is at the very top of your Solar Chart, the sector that signifies recognition, so don’t be surprised if you’re awash with thoughts and feelings about what it means to be acknowledged for your work. And if for some reason you feel ignored, take a moment and contemplate how you can improve your strategy and create the attention you deserve.

Gemini May 21-June 21
Zero Aquarius delineates the beginning of your Solar House of expansion, which means you can count on experiencing a wider range of ideas and connections. You don’t have to travel during this time, but if you do, you’re likely to find your worldview irrevocably altered.

Zero Aquarius is on the cusp of your Solar House of the home, which means it’s all about defining what home means to you. Whether it’s finding one, if you don’t already have one, revitalizing the one you’re in, or appreciating what you have, whatever your current situation, you’re trying create a greater sense of safety, security, and belonging, inside and out.

Sagittarius November 22-December 21
It can be argued that there’s nothing a Sagittarius loves more than conversation—shallow or deep, meaningful or superficial, you just like to talk. Zero Aquarius is at the cusp of your Solar House of communication, which means we can safely assume that conversations will be the key to your increased awareness. Have fun chatting, but also remember to listen—carefully.

Aquarius January 20-February 18
It’s an identity crisis: Zero Aquarius is the most visible point in your Solar Chart—it’s the Solar House of personality—and as Mars transits that point, you might find yourself called into all sorts of activities, all of which are going to change how the world sees you. Embrace the challenge to be a more outspoken you—even if that means defining yourself along a completely different spectrum.

Pisces February 19-March 20
Zero Aquarius is on the cusp of your Solar House of psychology—or the ninety percent of the brain that we aren’t consciously using. It just happens to be your place along the wheel of a natural astrological chart, which translates into you feeling quite comfortable with this new phase. It’s likely to intensify your psychic gifts, so pay attention to your intuition and use this phase to refine it.
