Welcome to the first week of 2019—seven days that set the tone for the year that lies ahead. Pay attention to the particulars because they unfold like a mini preview, packed with information that if used wisely could also been seen as a good training course for handling the challenges of the coming year.
A solar eclipse on Saturday, January 5, occurs with five planets in Capricorn—the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Saturn and Pluto—a planetary concentration that captures the tone of the entire year, given that all year long we’re moving inexorably toward the Saturn/Pluto conjunction, in Capricorn, on January 12, 2020. During this week’s solar eclipse, as the Moon overshadows the Sun, there’s no mistaking the no-nonsense signature of Saturn, which is currently transiting Capricorn, the Sign it rules. Saturn signifies boundaries, limits, and structures of all kinds, theoretical and actual, and as it journeys through its Home Sign, its powers are amplified, which translates into a super-serious atmosphere about everything, especially governments, corporations, and other structures we rely on to create and maintain order.
During a solar eclipse, emotional concerns override practical ones, but because this eclipse happens in Capricorn, the most pragmatic Sign in the zodiac, unconscious concerns represented by the Moon and conscious concerns represented by the Sun are likely to be quite similar. It’s not likely this eclipse will be particularly unemotional; it’s just that Capricorn is all about reality. I can hear some readers thinking, “Reality…what’s that? Didn’t we leave reality behind us long ago?” Yes, but practical concerns, especially concerns about survival, can carry deep emotional overtones. What’s more, because an eclipse effect is often felt up to six weeks before or after the actual event, it’s possible to view the shutdown of the United States government as emblematic of this eclipse, as it affects both the practical aspects of governing and the emotional consequences the shutdown has set in motion.
But that’s not all: During the January 5, 2019 solar eclipse, Pluto occupies the same degree at which the January 10, 2020 solar eclipse occurs at—20º Capricorn—and that eclipse takes place two days before the exact conjunction of Saturn and Pluto. So pay attention to what gets triggered for you—it’s likely you won’t resolve it until the end of 2019 or the beginning of 2020.
The most important rule of thumb for Saturday’s eclipse and its ongoing effect is to steer clear of rigid judgments that might get you stuck in an intolerant position from which there is no escape. I’m not suggesting you avoid awareness—observation is a key component of consciousness. I’m also not suggesting that you assume a passive, opinionless stance, which won’t be possible anyway. I’m simply advising you adopt a compassionate attitude, because a harsh finger-pointing attitude will only add to the difficulties and won’t help one bit in finding solutions.
Uranus goes direct on Sunday, January 6. Uranus symbolizes technology in all its various forms, and when it prepares for a “course correction,” all the devices that populate its vast domain act as if they have a life of their own, causing many to mistake techno-glitches for Mercury Retrograde interference. But just so we are clear, Mercury isn’t retrograde until March 5.
As Uranus moves forward it transits the final degrees of Aries, putting a planetary period at the end of a sentence that began in full force with the Fukushima tsunami of March 11, 2011. Uranus enters Taurus on March 6, 2019, a transit that lasts until 2025, and it is certain that the next several years will be filled with startling twists of fate, sponsored by Uranus, the astro revolutionary and its neverending mission to provoke, instigate, or catalyze change wherever it is needed. At its depths, Uranus’s journey through Taurus raises questions of what is valuable and why. Be prepared for a revolution that focuses on financial justice.
As you make your way through the week—and it is quite a week—envision yourself crossing a threshold into a different dimension. We’re entering a revolutionary universe—an era focused on the issues of social justice, not just in America but all around the world. Social justice is love at the collective level and because love is the fascia that holds everything together, we are required to expand our capacity to include everyone. Everyone—every person, plant, and species because Earth truly does hang in the balance. We’re moving closer to the United States Pluto Return in February of 2022—the American Revolution 2.0—and even though 2022 may seem light years away, in cosmic time it’s the blink of an eye.
