Every week I’ll be bringing you info about upcoming events and interesting happenings on the Salt Lake art scene, as well as studio tours, artist profiles, and reviews of events, galleries or on-going shows.
As an artist (or, more accurately, an artist-in-progress) I’m fascinated by the processes that lead to art-making—such as learning the craft, exploring ideas and developing a practice. In line with this, and with CATALYST’s mission to provide resources for creative living, I’ll also be highlighting classes, workshops, methods and ideas that artistically-inclined readers can use to enliven their own artistic practices, with occasional forays into aesthetics and art theory.

March marks the beginning of the end of winter! As we bid adieu to the inversion, snowy conditions and icy roads, new opportunities for growth and self-discovery begin to appear. The brightening sky is the limit!

RAW Art Events: On the Map with Neighborhood House
Neighborhood House, located on Salt Lake’s west side at 1050 West 500 South, was founded in 1894 by former teacher Emma K. McVicker. McVicker hoped to provide children from lower-income neighborhoods with the tools to succeed in main-stream schools with their more privileged peers. Today, Neighborhood House provides the same level of services to the community, providing a multicultural and multilingual environment for pre-school children, after-school programs, and opportunities for older children to work as mentors, as well as adult day car for elderly individuals. Committed to providing resources to enrich the community, Neighborhood House also offers some unusual cultural resources, such as their outdoor Urban Gallery.

Artist Spotlight: Judith Romney Wolbach
Artist Judith Romney Wolbach is a relative late-bloomer when it comes to the scene, embracing art-making only after retiring from her legal practice at age 65. But in Wolbach’s case, inactivity in the arts was the sign of deep roots sifting through a diversity of experiences before breaking forth. Never formally trained in art, Wolbach yet brings over 75 years of diverse knowledge and experience to her craft... although the road was most certainly long, and surprisingly winding.

Artist Spotlight: Margaret Tarampi
Margaret Tarampi’s work has aggressive, boundary-transgressing roots, infiltrating the rich soil of multiple disciplines and unfurling into something that owes a much to engineering and science as it does to the traditional concept of “art.” Originally from Pennsylvania, Tarampi graduated from Carnegie Mellon with a degree in architecture, studied for her master’s at Virginia Tech, and headed to the University of Utah, where she is currently pursuing a PhD in psychology. With a blend of art, engineering, and science in her tool kit, the point of curiosity in her work remains the human element. A master thesis titled “Neuro-architecture: How design designs us” indicates how Tarampi's underlying interest in understanding people fuels and unites her intellectual and artistic pursuits. Her latest works, We Are Salt Lake, a series of "Gestalt Portraits"of noteable Salt Lake subjects, provides an excellent example of work that is part art, part science, part optical illusion, while focusing on the individuality and humanity of the subjects. Aaaaaannnnnddd... We're back!
RAW Art is resuming its regularly scheduled, well, schedule for July. First off, we've got highlights for the month: with the eclectic-to-bizarre combinations of art and... other... areas of interest you'll find after the jump, there should be something to lure you out of the airconditioning, or to please the most art-averse of your friends or family.
